EP332: Thermal and Statistical Physics

Prof. Mithun K. Mitra

Course Description and Contents:

Revises the basic principles of thermodynamics and moves on to classical and quantum statistics. Study of various ensembles of particles is done. Fermi and Bose gases are covered in quantum statistics.

Attendance, Course Load and Grading:

Not compulsory attendance.

Tutorials are solved in class. Quizzes and exams can be a little difficult but if you attend the tutorial sessions and are comfortable with the concepts, you should do well.

3 hours of classes per week plus 1-2 hours per week for tutorials.

Added Information:

Lectures are good. Advisable to attend as you can clear out some of the difficult concepts in class itself. Better to study classical and quantum mechanics before taking up this course since some concepts are used.
